Last night Fay wasn't feeling well (headache and eye pain) so she took some tylenol and went to bed right after dinner. We put a cool washcloth on her eyes. She fell asleep before I could even open her journal.
Tonight, was different. Fay had a fun dinner. Pureed Pizza! She was a very good sport and ate it all.
We went to her room to clean her glasses and put out her night clothes. Then we headed to the elevator to see the blog. She was excited since it had been a couple of days since she had been up there. I turned on the computer and pulled up the blog after only three tries! Then I wheeled her chair into position so she could see everything. We went through all the comments, old and new. She smiled as I read them.
I asked if she wanted me to write anything special for her. She said yes. Then she said very clearly and without hesitation, "I think about you all the time and I can't wait to see you." She said, "There's a lot I'd like to write." Then, "I love you all!" Now this may not seem unusual to many of you, but it is very rare that Fay can utter even one word. A sentence, much less several in a row, is an amazing feat for her. Her ability to articulate has dwindled significantly, however, she can understand everything being said. This was a minor miracle.
We went back to her room. I finally got to pull out her journal and read to her. Tonight she said she could not remember the events I read about. They weren't important things so the fact that she didn't remember them wasn't something that worries me. She remembers when we read the really interesting parts.
As I was gathering my things to leave, I took her into the foyer (where the nurses station is, she likes to be where she can see what's going on, and they can make sure she is alright). I bent down to say good-bye and said "Be good," then thought again and said, "You don't have to be good, you can even be bad tonight if you want." She looked at me, caught my arms and said, "I'll be good!" We both laughed. It's been awhile since I've heard her laugh. It was lovely.
Many tears for each word you spoke, Mom! Congratulations on the success.
